Bali is one of the most magnificent islands in the world. I am about to embark on my second visit to this tropical Indonesian paradise next week because I’m hooked on the culture, lifestyle and natural beauty!
I know what you might be thinking – Bali is overpopulated with Western tourists, honeymoon couples and drunk Aussies on spring break. While this may be true to an extent, Bali definitely has an inspiring culture and amazing locals that you just have to see for yourself.
Just like these two locals I met during my first day in Bali — they were so cool!
The local Balinese people are very kind, welcoming, and they always go out of their way to say hello to you. Similar to people in the Philippines, it honestly feels like 5-star service everywhere you go. Can life get any better than this?
I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and visit places around the island that aren’t so touristy. Get outside of your hostel and find beaches and activities that are off the beaten path. You will be surprised by how down-to-earth and friendly the people are that you’ll come across along the way.
In the remainder of this blog post, I am going to share with you 5 Things to do in Bali with Locals.
1. Eat a Balinese Meal
The best way to get introduced to a Balinese meal is by Withlocals.com – this website allows travelers (like me and you) to eat incredible home-cooked meals at various households with local Balinese people cooking the food for you! It’s authentic, fun, and a great way to try new foods while making local friends.
It’s really the only market place for sharing unique travel experiences with real locals over food 🙂
2. Have a Night out on the Town
Bali is actually one of the biggest nightlife hubs in Asia. And if you’re a frequent reader of my blog, then you know how much I enjoy to party around the world!
The areas of Kuta and Seminyak are the most lively and energetic – on the Southwest coast of the island. In these areas, you will find loads of bars, clubs, lounges and partygoers. The nightlife scene has a nice mix of locals and foreigners – but I encourage you to go to a local bar to make some new friends! They will introduce you to this local booze called arak, which is very strong and will get you really drunk.
3. Go on an Island Tour
Use sites like Couchsurfing.com and MeetLocals to seek out locals in Bali, and ask them to take you on a tour of the island! Some places that you can visit are the monkey forest and rice terraces in Ubud, hike Mt. Batur Volcano, and go scuba diving in the crystal-clear ocean water!
4. Get a Massage
Balinese massages are about $7USD per hour and they are SO good! Obviously, the masseuses will be local Indonesian folks, so this is a nice opportunity to meet people and have a cultural exchange. You never know which new friends you will meet and have an awesome time with!
5. Adventure on a Motorbike
Are you aware that you can rent a motorbike in Bali for about $10USD per day? By doing so, you have the freedom to ride anywhere around the island that you wish! I recommend renting a bike, and then finding a local to join you and help you navigate around the island. This is the ultimate way to explore Bali.
I hope you enjoyed reading my post about 5 Things to do in Bali with Locals, and I truly hope you will visit this magnificent place. It’s paradise!
