Travelling abroad can be scary, especially when travelling solo. However, it doesn’t have to be!
If you actually try, making friends abroad can be easier than at home. So whether you are travelling solo or with someone and want to make some friends, check out these tips!
1) Stay in Hostels
Staying in a hostel is a great way to make friends! Hostels are full of like-minded people and often have many solo travellers looking for someone to hang out with. A lot of hostels also have events for travellers, such as pub-crawls, walking tours, and movie nights. All of those events are a great way to meet people.
2) Travel Alone
Travelling alone can be the best way to meet new people. When you travel with friends, you don’t have to worry about making new ones, so sometimes you just don’t. However, if you have no one else to talk to, you’ll be forced to talk to someone new.
While it isn’t necessarily true that travelling with friends means you won’t make new ones, sometimes others will be intimated by a group. If you are with a group of people others may not feel comfortable approaching you, so it can help to be solo.
If you are travelling alone, look into couch surfing to met other travelers and locals on the road!
3) Facebook Groups
Social media can be a great way to meet people these days. There are hundreds or Facebook groups dedicated to travelling. Often, if you post about going to a certain location there will be someone offering to show you around town.
Meeting someone you met online should always been done carefully though. Make sure you meet for the first time somewhere public! (and try to avoid using Tinder)…
4) Go on a Tour
Whether it’s a multi day tour or a couple of days long, tours can be a great way to make new friends. Everyone on the tour already will already have an interest in travel making it easy to have something to chat about. I have made numerous friends from doing multi day tours and day tours that I still talk to and stay with while travelling. I would’ve never made these friends if I didn’t travel by tour and it made my trips much more fun.
5) Find Friends of Friends
Once you get talking to people, everyone seems to know someone in the area you are travelling too. By talking to some of your friends and family, you can probably find a friend abroad who would be willing to show you around. It’s nice to have someone who is a local in a country that is new to you, and by asking around who knows how many people you can meet!
6) Be Outgoing
Lastly, by just being outgoing you can make a ton of friends! Even if you are a naturally shy person, when travelling abroad it can be easier to be outgoing. I tend to be shyer at home, but once I’m travelling I find it easier to be outgoing since no one already knows me! It can be as easy as just saying hi to someone!
If you are travelling alone or with friends, making new friends can be as easy as you want it to be. Friends you make while travelling can be some of the best friends of your life!
